A slow kitchen sink, a shower you’re standing in by the end, a floor drain that burps up water when the washer empties. We clear drains across Indianapolis the same day, with the right tool for the clog rather than the one that’s handy, and we check the line afterward so the clog doesn’t come back in six weeks. Price in writing before we start.

Which drain, which problem
Kitchen sink. Grease is the Indianapolis kitchen clog. It goes down warm and liquid, cools in the pipe, and builds up layer by layer until coffee grounds and rice finish the job. Garbage disposals make it worse by sending finely ground food into the grease. We cable the line from the trap to the stack and, for recurring grease clogs, jet the line clean.
Bathroom sink and tub. Hair, soap scum and toothpaste. In homes with hard water, which is every home on Citizens Energy water at roughly 19 grains per gallon, soap scum hardens into a scale that narrows the pipe. Older homes with galvanized drain lines are worse because the rough interior grabs everything.
Toilet. Usually a local clog that an auger clears in minutes. If every toilet in the house is sluggish or gurgles when the tub drains, it’s not the toilet; it’s the main line.
Floor drain and basement. The lowest drain in the house is where a main line problem shows up first. Water appearing here when you run the washing machine or flush upstairs means the sewer lateral is partly blocked. See sewer line repair.
Laundry. Lint, detergent residue and the occasional sock. Standpipes in older Indianapolis homes are often undersized for modern high-volume washers.
How we clear it
Cabling (snaking)
A motorized cable with a cutting head breaks through the clog and pulls out hair, roots or debris. This is the right tool for most single-fixture clogs and for cutting tree roots in a main line. It opens the pipe; it doesn’t fully clean the walls.
Hydro jetting
A high-pressure water jet, 1,500 to 4,000 psi, scours the full diameter of the pipe, stripping grease, scale and root fragments off the walls. Hydro jetting is the fix for recurring clogs, grease-heavy kitchen lines, and sewer laterals that keep catching debris after a root cut. It’s safe for sound pipe; we camera the line first if we have any doubt about its condition.
Camera inspection
For any main line clog, or any clog that’s come back, we run a camera after clearing to see what caused it. Roots, a cracked section, a belly, a foreign object: the camera shows you, so the next step is a decision rather than a guess.
What we don’t do
We don’t pour chemical drain cleaners. They rarely clear a real clog, they damage older pipe, and they make the standing water dangerous for anyone who has to work in it afterward.
Why drains clog more in older Indianapolis homes
Homes in Irvington, Meridian-Kessler, Broad Ripple, Fountain Square and Garfield Park were plumbed with galvanized steel drain lines inside the walls and cast iron under the floor. Galvanized pipe rusts from the inside, and the rough, narrowed interior catches hair and grease that would slide through smooth PVC. Cast iron scales and cracks. Combine that with mature trees pushing roots into clay sewer laterals and the result is a house where “the drains are just slow” has been true for twenty years. Clearing the clog is step one; if the pipe itself is the problem, we’ll show you on camera and talk about repiping or sewer repair.
Preventing the next clog
- Pour cooking grease into a can, not the sink, and run hot water for 30 seconds after using the disposal.
- Put a hair catcher in every shower and tub drain.
- Flush only toilet paper. “Flushable” wipes aren’t, and they are the number one cause of main line clogs we see.
- Once a month, pour a kettle of hot water down the kitchen drain to soften grease before it hardens.
- If you have a clay sewer lateral and mature trees, schedule a root cut every 12 to 18 months rather than waiting for a backup.

Frequently asked questions
How much does drain cleaning cost in Indianapolis?
Clearing a single sink, tub or toilet drain typically runs $150 to $350 in Indianapolis. Main sewer line cabling is $250 to $600, and hydro jetting $350 to $900 depending on the length and condition of the line. We quote the exact price before starting.
Can you come today?
In most cases, yes. Single-drain clogs are usually scheduled the same day, and main line backups are treated as emergencies around the clock with no after-hours charge.
Should I try a chemical drain cleaner first?
We’d rather you didn’t. They work on minor soap buildup at best, do nothing against grease plugs, hair mats or roots, and they corrode older galvanized and cast iron pipe. If you’ve already used one, tell the plumber so they can protect themselves from the standing water.
Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?
On sound pipe, yes. On badly corroded cast iron or cracked clay it can make a weak spot worse, which is why we camera any older main line before jetting it. If the pipe can’t take jetting, cabling and a repair plan is the right path.
Why does my kitchen drain keep clogging?
Grease. It cools and hardens on the pipe walls a little more with every wash, and a disposal adds ground food to the mix. Cabling punches a hole through it; hydro jetting removes it. If the clog returns within months of a jetting, the pipe is probably undersized or damaged.
All my drains are slow at once. What does that mean?
That’s a main line problem, not a fixture clog, usually tree roots or a damaged section of the sewer lateral. We clear the main and run a camera to find the cause. See our sewer line repair page for what comes next.
Do you clean drains in commercial kitchens?
Yes. Restaurants and commercial kitchens across Indianapolis get scheduled hydro jetting for grease lines, after-hours appointments and grease trap service. See commercial plumbing.
How often should a sewer line be cleaned?
If your home has a clay lateral and mature trees nearby, every 12 to 18 months keeps roots from building up to a blockage. Homes with PVC laterals and no root history usually only need attention when something changes.
